Understanding the Canadian Dental Care Plan

Canada’s new dental care plan provides basic oral health care to Canadian citizens who may not otherwise be able to afford it. The program will be phased in throughout 2024 and 2025. At Thornhill Dental, we want to ensure comprehensive dental care for all our patients. The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) has broadened its coverage to include a number of preventive and corrective dental procedures for Canadian residents. What is the CDCP? The CDCP is a federally funded program that offers dental coverage to Canadian residents with an annual net income under $90,000 who lack dental insurance. It covers a range of dental services, including preventive, diagnostic, restorative, and more.

What makes me eligibile for CDCP?

  • No existing dental insurance.
  • Family net income under $90,000.
  • Canadian resident with a filed tax return.
  • Annual re-enrollment required.

What does each CDCP tier cover?

  • Tier 1: 100% coverage for incomes under $70k.
  • Tier 2: 60% coverage for incomes between $70k-$80k.
  • Tier 3: 40% coverage for incomes between $80k-$90k.

What type of coverage is offered?

  • May 2024: Basic services covered.
  • November 2024: Services requiring pre-authorization available.
  • Co-payments required for incomes between $70k-$89,999.
  • Patients may need to pay any additional charges beyond CDCP fees.

What services are covered?

  • Without Pre-authorization: Diagnostic, preventive, restorative, endodontic, prosthodontic services, minimal sedation.
  • With Pre-authorization (from November 2024): Specialist exams, crowns, root canal re-treatments, major surgeries, orthodontics (2025).

What is excluded?

  • Veneers, whitening, inlays/onlays, fixed prosthodontics, implants, bone grafts, and other specific procedures.

What is the timeline for enrollment?

  • May 2024: Seniors (65+).
  • June 2024: Children (under 18) and Adults with Disability Tax Credit.
  • 2025: Adults (18-64).

How do I get coverage?

  • Invitations to apply are mailed; follow instructions to apply by phone or online.
